Pepper spray is a legal self defense product in the state of California. There are no special permits required to posses pepper spray in California. In addition to an attacker, stalker or other violent person, it can also be used on aggressive or vicious animals such as bears, coyotes, dogs, mountain lions, and other animals that populate the large state of California.
California does have limitation on the legal size of pepper spray canisters. They must be no larger than 2.5 ounces of active product. All canisters must be labeled that they are for self defense purposes. Using pepper spray or discharging pepper spray on an animal or person in a non self defense situation can result in fines of $1000 and up and/or three years in prison.
